Miss Katie’s Crab Shack, Needs Some Shaking Up

Hollywood and the gang went to check out Miss Katie’s Crab Shack and see how she ranks in the Melbourne Fried Chicken scene. Miss Katie’s was formerly known as Dr Juicy Jay’s. Dr. Juicy Jay’s did rank well when the chicken scene hit it up for a review the first time so we were very eager to see if Katie could do better than the Doctor.

We ordered a whole bunch food consisting of the buffalo wings which were on special, the bucket of prawns, the crab, and the fried chicken. The wings were really good however seemed to be overpriced standing at 16$ for 6 full wing pieces, seriously, what the falafel?!

We were turned off by the prawns being cold and they no longer were served in the chili lemon sauce that the doctor perfected. The crab boil was ok for what it is, but moving on it was the chicken we were here to cluck.

The chicken no longer came as a sea of tender pieces but rather 6 pieces of chicken on the bone. The spices were good however Hollywood was majorly disappointed to find out that the drumstick wasn’t properly cooked all the way. Parts of it were on the raw side and very chewy. This was a first for the chicken scene.

Conclusion: Out of all the places we reviewed so far none have served us uncooked chicken. Miss Katie, you need to shape up because the magic the Juicy Dr had going for the crab shack seems to have disappeared!

Our Christmas break was full of sunshine and good food. We had a free evening and hoped to discover another great Melbourne Fried Chicken place close to home, but we ended up with good atmosphere and disappointing fare at The Collection in Richmond.

The Collection Signage

The space is the right size and the decorations and long bar made The collection a good place to hang out. The noise level was high from all the fellow patrons, giving the place a bit of a buzz. The waiter was attentive and quick with the drink menu. The Chick ordered a Side Car after being told the bartender could do anything. It came with sugar on the rim and everything!

Mac and Cheese Coquettes

Louisiana Fried Chicken

Louisiana Fried Chicken

Our food order consisted of Louisiana Fried Chicken (main), fried Mac n’ Cheese (entree), and the pulled pork sliders (main).

The Mac n’ Cheese and sliders came first. There were 4 rectangles or fried cheesiness and they were sadly a bit over fried and dry. They weren’t nearly cheesy flavored enough, but there was a chipotle mayo on the side that gave them a bit of flavor. The sliders were pretty good, the buns were a bit too dry, but each came with a mini onion ring for an extra crunch and the sauce on the pork was sweet and tasty. These were the Chick’s favorite of the dishes.

The Louisiana Fried Chicken order came shortly after the entrees but was a sad little chicken breast. Before we could complain, the waiter offered his apologies for the serving size and explained that a second serving was in the making to compensate.

The chicken certainly doesn't dominate the plate. A very wimpy "main"

A bit of chicken dipped in blue cheese sauce. Hit the spot for Hollywood, didn’t work for the Chick.

The first serve was fresh, but too thin, the breading had a good spice, but not that crunchy and seemed a bit dry because the chicken was so thin. It had clearly just came out of the frier, so it was nicely hot. The beans on the side were good, mostly kidney beans, a little bit of ham hock, with a thick sauce on the sweet side. There was a blue cheese sauce that Hollywood enjoyed, but the Chick felt that it was the wrong side for a low spice dish. The hot sauces on the table – especially the Habenero offered a nice kick.

Homemade hot sauces gave a much needed kick. The Habenero was very edible, not a chili challenge.

Homemade hot sauces gave a much needed kick. The Habenero was very edible, not a chili challenge.

The second order was hot, dry, and more salty than spicy. It was a thicker piece of breast, but still not big enough to be a proper main dish. The first one had more flavor and the second order seemed to have been thrown together rather than a showcase of their best fried chicken. The Chick and Hollywood used the hot sauce to make it through.

Second order, thicker breast, but lacking in the spices the first order had

In summary, the food is certainly edible, but only worth it if you are going for the drinks or because you’re in the neighborhood.

Joe’s Bar – Revisit #2

We had a long night ahead of us which included a Christmas party for The Chick and a gig full of dancing to The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff @ The Espy and the only thing missing was a taste of some crispy Melbourne Fried Chicken.

It’s been a while since we’ve been to Joe’s and we were very eager to check out their new and improved menu. The chicken was still there however now it is labeled as JFC (Joe’s Fried Chicken). Bring it on! Our order consisted of Joe’s Southern Fried Chicken (JFC), 2 fish tacos, the mixed salad and an order of the smoked wings as recommended by our friendly waiter.

2013-12-13 21.34.28

The tacos and the mixed salad were both crunchy, fresh and good. The corn bread was a bit on the dry side and it crumbled to the touch, but it had the familiar corn taste and texture and the Chick smashed the whole thing. The fried chicken was different than the last time we visited. It was all chicken strips and there were more pieces which sat well with us. JFC was fresh, steamy hot and crunchy. The spices were good and had refreshing lime flavor which was a very good twist.

2013-12-13 21.26.11

The wings were average and were large wing pieces which consisted of the drummette, wingette and the tips. They were smokey hot and the sauce was good however were a bit tricky to tackle, especially one handed. Hollywood couldn’t finish them all, a devastating admission from the king of clucks.

Le Joint

Hollywood and the boys were celebrating the beginning of Movember and their cleanly shaven upper lips and what better way to celebrate than sinking down a few cold brews and gobbling down some good ol crispy Melbourne Fried Chicken

Le Joint was on Hollywood’s radar ever since it popped up on the webby web as a cool funky place with good burgers and chooks. Also we all had an urge to get our fortune told by the one and only Zoltar!

lejoint

We reached there and got a few Dos Blockos beers and went for 3 orders of the southern fried chicken along with one serve of chips to share.

2013-11-01 18.40.01

The chicken arrived in a portion of 3 pieces accompanied with a corn aioli dipping sauce. We struggled a bit to start as the pieces were steaming hot which was a good testimony to how fresh the chooks were. They were lightly spiced, and very tender. The drumstick was the only boned piece while the breast and thigh pieces were boneless. The skin was crispy and single coated. Overall the chicken was good with a good price to portion ratio and sat well with the Mo Bros however Hollywood found that it couldve been heavier with the spices and a bit extra greasy to his liking. The chips seemed reheated and weren’t that good.

The Belly of the B.East

There was a heated argument brewing between Hollywood and The Chick about the future of the chicken scene. This began shortly after experiencing chicken nirvana at Rockwell and Sons. The Chick’s argument was that there’s no point in continuing the Melbourne Fried Chicken hunt since they found the number one golden chooks. Hollywood however thought there are many feathered adventures in their future and was determined to leave no chicken unclucked.

After lots of discussion, the Chick consented to another round, and accompanied with friend of the blog The Jasonator, head over into the belly of the B.East for their next Melbourne Fried Chicken adventure. The Chick hates being right about these things.

The place had a cool northern suburb funky bar vibe. The B.East’s big hype was their Beast burger standing huge with three burger patties and six bacon rashers with a challenge of eating it in less than 3 minutes to be inducted into their wall of fame.

P1010050

We ordered the Beast with fries, jalapeño poppers, 2 serves of southern fried chicken (as we were informed each serve consists of only 2 pieces) and a slaw salad in addition to beers and the Bloody Sunday special cocktail: Italian Bloody Mary.

P1010051

The Bloody Mary came out first and it was exotic, very cool and tasty. The best description is that it was like a liquid pizza pie, including a dusting of parmesan.

P1010052

The poppers, chicken and slaw arrived all together. The poppers were disappointing as they were a bit crunchier than expected and the cheesy and spicy flavours that you would expect weren’t prominent. The slaw was average and the chicken was the biggest disappointment of all. It was hot but seemed very greasy, flavorless, and lacked any spices. The chicken meat seemed mushy somehow and fell off the bone in a less than appetizing way. This was a total miss! Maybe Sunday nights aren’t the best for a fresh chook.

P1010060

P1010070

P1010075

The Beast burger was very juicy and meaty which sat well with us. The meat did seem overwhelming at certain moments but overall sat very well with Hollywood and he reckons he could definitely smash it in less than 3 minutes but that might be a different mission (without the Chick wondering at the point).

Overall the B.east is a fun bar to go to but the chicken is definitely not a dish to be had there. This confirmed The Chick’s earlier point and although Hollywood still had high hopes for Melbourne’s clucks the “I told you so” look he copped might’ve been well deserved.

Ring My Belle’s, Diner

Back from the US and time for some good ol’ Melbourne Fried Chicken. Next on the list: Belle’s Diner on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy. What better way to celebrate a return to Melbourne than greasing up with some delicious Melbourne Fried Chicken.

2013-08-09 19.02.38

Belle’s is a diner style joint with a discrete sign. We settled in at the bar since the tables were all reserved and the Chick wasted no time ordering deep fried pickles. After perusing the menu the full order went in: side green salad, mac n’ cheese (feta, gouda and cheddar), Jalapa Burger (with Jalapeños) and the Southern Fried Chicken with Slaw accompanied with Sparkling white wine and a Hawthorn Pilsner.

2013-08-09 18.58.40

2013-08-09 18.59.10

The fried pickles came out quickly and The Chick fell in love with them. A little hot sauce and the creamy dip mixed well with the salty/sour nuggets. Order these!

2013-08-09 19.04.55

Shortly afterwards the rest of the food came out. The Jalapa burger was ok, our main beef: it was a bit too bready and on the under cooked side. The mac-n-cheese was perfect: cheesy and creamy in all the right places and came in a generous portion with a crispy/salty breadcrumb topping.

The fried chicken was more tenders-style, no bones. It was about 6-8 pieces, single coated, lightly spiced, fresh and steamy. It was a bit over salted but that didn’t stop up from smashing the whole plate. The nice twist to it were the sides of tasty BBQ sauce (smokey and a touch sweet) and the slaw (a healthy portion). The chicken was good but didn’t compete at the top of the class with other Melbourne Fried Chicken contenders.

Conclusion: Belle’s diner is a cool place with a retro style vibe, quick service and good food. It has some good menu options to offer and is well worth a visit. The fried chicken is above average and will fill you up so give it a try!

Lo-Lo’s Southern Fried Chicken and Waffles

Hollywood and The Chick’s epic US trip ended with a stop at Phoenix Arizona’s well reviewed Lo-Lo’s Southern Fried Chicken and Waffles. We picked this place to see how Melbourne Fried Chicken compared to the real southern deal (Arizona is close enough, right?).

2013-07-26 14.08.21

We arrived in the middle of a scorching summer day and found that the place was packed. We accepted outdoor seating, and we were the only ones brave enough to eat without air conditioning. Hollywood ordered 3 pieces of southern fried chicken, with sides of mac n cheese, collared greens, and corn bread with whipped butter. Drinks came in large canning jars with plenty of ice. The Chick decided to share rather than face an American portion solo.

2013-07-26 14.17.07

The food arrived fast. The chicken was cooked well but wasn’t spiced enough and resembled more fast food style fried chicken (KFC). It was hot and steamy and well coated. The breast piece was a bit dry which confirmed our theories of fast food style of cooking. The mac n cheese was creamy but the macaroni was a bit overcooked. The Chick reckons the collard greens were average and the cornbread was too dry and not spicy enough. Perhaps the Waffles are where it’s at, but we may never know.

The wait staff moved us inside for dessert and finished off our experience with a slice of Red Velvet Cake, which was proudly advertised out front. The cake was a bit dry but the nutty frosting left the Chick’s sweet tooth satisfied, if not impressed.

Overall much better than Route 66, but still nothing compared to foodie experiences back home.
