We had a long night ahead of us which included a Christmas party for The Chick and a gig full of dancing to The Magnificent DJ Jazzy Jeff @ The Espy and the only thing missing was a taste of some crispy Melbourne Fried Chicken.
It’s been a while since we’ve been to Joe’s and we were very eager to check out their new and improved menu. The chicken was still there however now it is labeled as JFC (Joe’s Fried Chicken). Bring it on! Our order consisted of Joe’s Southern Fried Chicken (JFC), 2 fish tacos, the mixed salad and an order of the smoked wings as recommended by our friendly waiter.
The tacos and the mixed salad were both crunchy, fresh and good. The corn bread was a bit on the dry side and it crumbled to the touch, but it had the familiar corn taste and texture and the Chick smashed the whole thing. The fried chicken was different than the last time we visited. It was all chicken strips and there were more pieces which sat well with us. JFC was fresh, steamy hot and crunchy. The spices were good and had refreshing lime flavor which was a very good twist.
The wings were average and were large wing pieces which consisted of the drummette, wingette and the tips. They were smokey hot and the sauce was good however were a bit tricky to tackle, especially one handed. Hollywood couldn’t finish them all, a devastating admission from the king of clucks.
Hollywood’s Rating: 7.5/10 Clucks
The Chick’s Rating: 8/10 Clucks – Joe’s is now a go-to favorite in the St Kilda neighborhood
