Jones The Grocer (Qatar)

Hollywood and The Chick were in Qatar for a brief stop and there were many fried chicken potentials. The one that was picked was Jones The Grocer as it was Aussie themed so it was about time to see how it compares to Melbourne Fried Chicken

They had a chili specials section and to The Chicken Scene’s surprise it a fried chicken burger on it, so we got it!

The fried chicken burger was actually good. The sriracha slaw gave it a slight pleasant kick. The chicken meat was thigh meat which made it a bit oily and greasy, but not too much, however that could’ve been one of the downsides of it. The bun was a bit bready which added made it a bit heavy. However the ingredients all seemed of good quality and cooked fresh and the chicken was tender and steamy with the right spices

In summary Jones The Grocer was a good place to check out. Give it a try if you are in Qatar!

Thyme to get to Clucked

The newest contender in the Melbourne Fried Chicken scene is Clucked, on Carlisle St in St. Kilda – they serve up tasty chicken with a unique blend of spices.  Even more surprising, the side salads weren’t just second thoughts. It was the perfect meal that left us content without that too greasy feeling.

The simple menu makes it easy to order, come here for the chicken and throw in some arancini if you are hungry.

In addition to an order of 5 pieces, 3 pieces, and a taleggio arancini we got the large chips – which have an amazing spicy salt. All served in takeaway boxes in case you need to head on to the races (as we saw some people doing).

All the sauces are tasty: sriracha, dill seed and aioli. The meat is all breast, no bones, freshly cooked, steamy, tender and full of spices making it a treat to eat. Hollywood and the Chick prefer the boneless, but recognise it is not “authentic” southern style. Purists may quibble, but we think most people will enjoy the quality chicken, unique seasonings and less mess. We did sense a unique flavour of thyme, exciting!

The side salads made us feel a little bit less naughty. The coleslaw is a necessity for any fried chicken place, the quinoa/pumpkin salad is a must for a Melbourne cafe and the rice salad is just a bonus.

Mary’s (Sydney)

Hollywood’s quick visits to Sydney always lead to a visit to Mary’s. This time a sampling of their fried chicken burger was needed to see if it stands a chance against Melbourne Fried Chicken.

imageMary’s burgers are a favourite of ours however their fried chicken burger was a bit too greasy/oily. This might be due to the fact that they used thigh meat. Overall the meat was freshly fried and Mary’s sauce is still to do die for however maybe changing to a breast cut could make the burger better.

On a separate note their Mary’s burger along with thick chocolate milkshake are a tasty deadly combo.
